International Chemical Recovery Conference (ICRC)

November 7 - 10, 2021 • Atlanta, GA


The International Chemical Recovery Conference scheduled for Spring 2020 in Brazil was canceled due to the global pandemic. At the time it was not possible to pivot to an online format. To create a forum for academic papers that were to be presented at that conference, TAPPI has allowed us to run sessions that were intended for the 2020 ICRC as part of the 2021 TAPPI PEERS Conference.


The chemical recovery cycle makes kraft pulping economically feasible. Key unit operations including the recovery boiler, recaust plant, lime kiln and power generation have significant impacts on maintaining high mill production rates.

The purpose of this year’s sessions and panels are to provide experiences from industrial and academic experts on equipment maintenance, process chemistry and new technologies.

This track will provide participants with both fundamental and practical knowledge on key process areas in a mill, including evaporators, recovery boiler, recaust plant, lime kiln and energy generation. Topics are focused on maximizing the efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of the recovery cycle. The Conference includes many presentations that cover the intersection of process chemistry and the industrial process and in that way are an opportunity to gain greater insight into process chemistry.

Learning Outcomes:

1.    Gain fundamental and practical knowledge for key unit operations in the recovery cycle, with a focus on best practices and the latest technologies.
2.    Opportunity to learn about the intersection of process chemistry and technology.
3.    Apply learning at participants’ mill site to gain improvements in process operability, reduce variability, minimize downtime and improve safety.
