FEATURED PRESENTATION

Alternative Pulping Platform: Deploying CCR Technology for Nonwood Fibers

Session 9  •  Monday, November 2  •  4:45pm - 6:15pm

Today the global pulp and paper industry is dominated by Kraft and other conventional pulping technologies designed to process wood chips from trees into paper products. An alternative technology, continuous countercurrent reactor (CCR) technology, has proven to use less water consumption, 8.3 times less effluent stream, 25% less chemical consumption, 55.7% less energy usage, 40% less pulp cost at the 50-t/day scale, and a shorter 4-minute pulping process which produces a high, quality lignin.

In addition, the hemicellulose that is solubilized in the CCR and is washed out as xylose has been proven to be fermentable, creating two value-added co-products.

This presentation will discuss the benefits of CCR technology including refinery operations with a smaller footprint, lower CapEx, and the ability to produce different qualities of pulp in real time.
