This workshop will introduce you to basic Lean Six Sigma (LSS) tools and techniques. Participants will gain a broad understanding of the philosophy, methods and benefits of lean and six sigma as they apply to all types of enterprises. The workshop features classroom instruction, team learning activities, and case studies that aim at process improvement objectives such as increasing process efficiency, improving quality, reducing cycle times, optimizing business/operational processes, etc.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the workshop, you will be able to: A) Determine LSS/DMAIC methodology to assess and improve a variety of manufacturing processes; B) Demonstrate skills leading to LSS White Belt trained status; C) Describe the requirements for professionalism in the industry, especially leadership and teamwork.


LSS is a large topic too broad for full coverage in an eight-hour workshop. An overview of the five stages, described below, is provided with the strongest emphasis on Stage 1: Define the Problem. The workshop will conclude with suggestions for additional learning.


STAGE 1: DEFINE - Describe the problem
Project Charter, VOC, VOB, CTQC, Process/Value Stream Mapping, Affinity Diagram, SIPOC, etc

STAGE 2: MEASURE - Collect baseline data
MSA, Control Charts, Process Stability and Capability, Lean Assessment, etc.

STAGE 3: ANALYZE - Identify the root cause
C&E Diagram, C&E MAtrix, FMEA, Passive Analysis, etc

STAGE 4: IMPROVE - Select the best solution
Benchmarking, Pilot, Risk Assessment, etc.

STAGE 5: CONTROL - Sustain the gains
Statistical Process and Quality Control, Control Plan, Cost-Benefit Analysis, etc.

About the Instructor:

Dr. Lokendra Pal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Forest Biomaterials at North Carolina State University. Dr. Pal brings over 14 years of industrial experience in the research and manufacturing of paper-based materials and professional experience in managing and collaborating with industrial partners worldwide.

Dr. Pal has filed 32 patent applications and been granted 21 patents. Before joining NC State, Dr. Pal spent 9 years working with Hewlett-Packard in the Media Supplies and Solutions group leading new product development and cost reduction programs.

He obtained his Ph.D. in Paper and Imaging Science and Engineering from Western Michigan University. He is a certified Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Black Belt and Quality System Assessment (QSA) Auditor. Dr. Pal is a member of TAPPI and ACS.

His research mainly focuses on the development of sustainable bioproducts (functional coatings and composites, flexible hybrid electronics, 3D printable biomaterials/hydrogels, nanocellulose) that benefits the society as well as the environment.
